Transitions and Connecting Words

Transitional phrases help the reader follow the logic of the writer's ideas.  They smooth the transitions between sentences and paragraphs, and help the reader follow the direction of the writer's thoughts.

In addition to transitional phrases, writers also use repeated words and synonyms to help the reader follow the message.  These repeated words help to connect sentences and concepts, clarifying ideas.

Depending on the organizational pattern(s) present in a work, different transitional phrases may be used.  Some transitions help the reader organize sequence or chronology.  Others may inform the reader of emphasis or help a reader shift gears.  Still others signal a closing or final message.

Consider the types of transition and connecting words below.

Action words tell the sequence of actions or steps.  They help the reader move along -- or transition -- from process to process.
