Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island is the largest barrier island in a strand of islands that separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna Madre. The Padre Island National Seashore is a protected area on the island that helps visitors enjoy the coastline, dunes, prairies, and wind tidal flats teeming with life.

The National Seashore is a safe nesting ground for the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and a haven for over 380 bird species. It also has a rich human history, as the site of the now-famous Spanish shipwrecks of 1554.

With a 4-wheel drive vehicle, visitors can travel 60 miles along the coast all the way down to where the Mansfield Channel separates North and South Padre Islands. The primitive beach is a great place for camping and fishing.

The Laguna Madre is the body of water on the intercoastal side of the island (between Texas and the barrier islands). Only three feet deep, the Laguna Madre is one of the saltiest bodies of water on the planet. Visitors enjoy fishing, boating, windsurfing and exploring the native wildlife there. All of this makes Padre Island National Seashore an amazing destination.
