Learning Target: I can measure the volume of an object by counting cubic units.
Understanding Volume
Volume can be measured by using cubes of equal sizes.
A cube measuring 1 unit on each edge has a volume of 1 cubic unit.
Volume = 1 unit3
Counting the total number of cubes that fill the space will result in the volume of a solid figure.
Example
1. Use unit cubes to build a rectangular prism.
2. Count the number of cubes used to build the prism.
The rectangular prism is made up of 12 unit cubes.
3. Record the volume
That means the figure has a volume of 12 cubic units.
Let's Practice Together
Find the volume of each prism.
1. What is the volume of the solid below?
Your Turn
2. Each individual cubic unit below measures 1 cubic foot. What is the volume of the solid figure?
3. The side length of each individual cubic unit below is 1 cm. What is the volume of the solid figure?
4. Find the volume in cubic units.
