By now you know the regular letter sounds.
 



Many letters also make special sounds.

Long vowels:  ā, ē, ī, ō, ū

If a short word ends in a vowel, the vowel may make its long sound.

If a word ends in a consonant and y, the y can make the long ī sound.


y in fly


Sometimes the y makes the long ē sound.


y in baby


If a word ends in a vowel and y, the vowel can make its long sound.


ay in hay




ey in key


Soft consonants

The letters c and g can have soft sounds.


The soft c sounds like /s/.


c in city


The soft g sounds like /j/.


g in giant
