If ever there was a woman who overcame the odds, it was Wilma Rudolph.  Read her amazing story below. 


 

Wilma Rudolph

1     Wilma Rudolph won three gold medals for running track in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.  She became known as the fastest woman in the world.  Most people would not believe that there was a long time when Wilma could not even walk. 

2     When Wilma was four, she was very sick.  After her illness, she could not walk.  Her family did not have a wheelchair for her.  She spent her days in a bed or carried in a chair. Wilma did not walk for two years.  When Wilma was six, she began to walk with a brace.  She wore the brace on her leg until she was 11 years old. 

3     Once she took the brace off, she could walk and run.  She liked running so much, she never stopped!  She was a woman who never gave up.  In Rome, she ran across the finish line for gold medals.
