Learning Target: I can divide a decimal by a whole number.
Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers
Example
Find 4.2 ÷ 7.
Step 1: Set up the problem. Write the decimal point on the quotient line directly above the decimal point in the dividend.
Step 2: Divide as if the decimal point were not there. Think of how many times 7 goes into 42.
Step 3: Check for reasonableness.
Understand, that your answer will reflect that you are really dividing 7 into 4.2. Seven will not fit into 4.2 even one time. The answer will be less than one. The answer 0.6 makes sense.
4.2 ÷ 7 = 0.6
